The importance of words in medicine

Just as the health of the human body is important, so is its mental state. In medicine, "healing with words", or psychological and emotional support, is taking an ever greater place. In this method, one communicates not with the patient's body but with their soul, mind and feelings. A doctor's sincere words, encouraging tone and kind manner can often be more effective than strong medicines.
A medical worker is not only a specialist who identifies and treats a disease, but also a delicate interlocutor who reaches into the human psyche. A patient admitted to hospital experiences not only physical pain but also depression, fear and loneliness. At such times, the doctor's simple but reassuring words such as "You will recover soon," "This is temporary, we are with you," and "Don't be afraid of anything, I am by your side" give the patient great positive strength.
In medical practice, it has been proven that approaching the patient with empathy - listening sincerely and showing care - can speed up the recovery process. The method of healing with words is especially effective in the following cases:
—in patients with chronic diseases;
—in reducing fear before surgery;
—when working with oncology patients;
—when communicating with children and elderly patients, and the like.
Here, not only the words spoken by the doctor or nurse but also their tone, facial expression and gaze play an important role.
In the modern science of psychosomatics, it has been proven that some diseases of the body are directly related to mental state. For example, stress, depression and loneliness cause problems related to the cardiovascular system, the gastrointestinal tract and the immune system. This shows that the patient's condition can be improved through the doctor's positive and hopeful communication.
Healing with words is an integral part of modern medicine. Today, communicative competence - that is, a doctor's skills in communicating correctly - is taught separately in medical universities. Along with professional knowledge, a specialist in every field needs to acquire a psychological approach to the patient.
In medicine, the word is not only a means of information but a source of healing, hope and strength. The caring, patient and attentive manner of doctors and nurses often gives a strong push to the patient's recovery. If every medical worker understands this and approaches every tone of their words responsibly, they will have done one of the greatest good deeds for humanity.
